It's easy to see why ads for business opportunities like these appeal to consumers looking to make extra money: They promise good pay for little effort. But, as many consumers who have answered these ads have learned - and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has found - many business opportunity promotions are nothing but scams that take consumers' money up front and fail to deliver on the promises.

There are hundreds and hundreds of business opportunities available, from the local 'mom and pop' business to the designer clothes business generally run out of the shops on Rodeo Street.

I call most of the business seminars that people are promoting business opportunities. Seminar promoters get a group of people in a hotel ballroom and pitch them a unique business situation. They always promote something at a very high price but if you buy today you get a special deal.

They range to distributorships, stock programs, Internet opportunities, real estate opportunities, home business opportunities and so forth. The prices can run over $1,000 to as much as $20,000.

You can start your own business with your own hot idea or you can follow along with someone else's idea and improve on it in some way exclusively your own. Interestingly enough, the world's wealthiest guy, Bill Gates, did not invent his own product, but picked up on someone else's product... improved it... and marketed the product through IBM.Such a simple approach... but he was the first when no one else saw the tremendous opportunity the Personal Computer was creating.

If you have a subject that you are knowledgeable in You can give seminars on the subject and do quite well. Some people make $50,000 to $60,000 for three days work putting on their own seminar. Some seminar givers are doing it on the Internet... not a bad idea if you have a particular expertise... Some Internet gurus are putting up Internet Malls for marketing products The entrepreneur magazines abound with every kind of gimmick you can imagine.

Internet marketing seems to be what most of the new seminars are about. They offer space in their Internet malls for $2,195 and full resellers rights to the classified ads programs. They will tell you to take out advertisements and make a fortune selling ads.$2,195 seems like a lot of money just to be a distributor.

I know from personal experience that expensive business opportunities are not always the best. If you don't believe me, just find anybody who has plunked down $9,995 for the latest business opportunity seminar and see how much money they are making.

My advice: Find someone who is going to show you how to really make money for a reasonable affordable price, not someone that wants you to spend $9,995.
