In general, terms they are the banks and companies that conduct financial activities of all types as commercial, agricultural, industrial, savings, investment and development banks, credit finance companies, and finance services companies.

The financial institutions generally fall under the financial supervision from a government authority. Each institution has its own rules and policies. It is important to go through them before deciding about them. The types of products and services offered, the criteria for qualifying for a loan, minimum balances for accounts, charges for account services etc are the queries one must go with.
