Everybody want's to work from home or so it seems. Actually it's one in three people say. I have been doing it for years and love it. Many people ask me how they can work from home because the ability to work at home is probably one of the greatest things that at person can do. It's the American Dream come true and thousands of people are doing it every day.

I call it the five minute commute and most anyone can do it. If working at home is something that you want to do - don't give up. I promise that if you work hard enough, you will eventually be able to quit your job and truly work from home. But as we are showing you in this site there are a lot of scams out there and you need to try to figure out for your self the truth from the fiction.

An estimated 24 million people work from home, experts said. They do everything from being "virtual assistants" to operating referral services to doing direct sales -- all legitimate work-at-home opportunities. But to find them, you have to wade through a lot of scams.

There are hundreds, maybe thousands of different opportunities out there. I think most of them are, if not an outright scam, its people taking advantage of the opportunity to provide information for a fee that could be gotten for free.

The average income nationwide for working from home is $38,000 a year, which is an estimated, with some people only supplementing their regular income and others working full-time.

Virtual assistants are the latest trend in legitimate at-home jobs. These work-from-home administrative assistants contract with businesses to do tasks ranging from writing letters, making travel arrangements, conducting research, doing errands and making telephone calls.

Starting rates are about $25 to $30 per hour according to the International Virtual Assistant Association, which has 500 members. But it's not a job for everyone.

Just because you can type and have a computer doesn't mean you can be a successful virtual assistant. You have to know how to market your business and how to keep your clients happy. There are about 1,000 virtual assistants worldwide.

Contractor referrals

For those who know a little about home improvement, an up-front cost of $2,000 to $3,000 will get you a kit describing how to set up your own homeowner-contractor referral network.

The kit's purveyor launched Home Remedies of New York five years ago, when she quit her full-time Manhattan marketing job to stay at home with a new baby.

The house she and her husband had purchased - a 75-year-old Tudor -- needed work, opening her eyes to the difficulty of finding a good contractor. So she launched a referral service to connect homeowners with pre-screened contractors.

She works about 25 hours a week, and grossed $160,000 last year contractor commissions and sales on her kit. There are also legitimate direct marketing opportunities but they can be hard to find among all the pyramid schemes.

Red flags

To distinguish an honest direct sale business from a scam, make sure-front costs are low, the focus is on selling a product instead of recruiting new salespeople, and unused merchandise can be returned, the Direct Sales Association recommended.

And if you are ever tempted by the wealth promised for stuffing envelopes, think again. It's highly likely the job is bogus, and the advertiser just wants the $30 or so up-front fee.

I have never, ever come across a legitimate job for an envelope stuffer. In fact, any job requiring an up-front fee should warn you there might be a scam afoot.

If they're purporting it to be a job, then you should never have to pay a fee. If you went in for an interview with an employer and as you're wrapping up they said 'I'm going to need $35.95 from you to go forward,' you would never pay that. That would be ridiculous."

More red flags: vague job descriptions or ads that say no skills or experience necessary, and no contact information.

I would say that if they're not willing to put their contact information anywhere on the Web site it makes it seem as though they have something to hide.

With any work-at-home opportunity, the FTC advises checking with your local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the company, and asking for local references of people already employed by the business.

Also, the FTC recommends you ask the following questions of the employer:

What tasks will I have to perform?

Will I be paid a salary or based on a commission?

Who will pay me?

When will I get my first paycheck?

What is the total cost of the work-at-home program,including supplies, equipment and membership fees?

Before you start navigating the sea of rip-offs in search of an honest buck, look in the mirror. There is no get-rich-quick scheme, experts say. You need to be an entrepreneur, able to market yourself and willing to work hard to sell a product you are passionate about.

Those who pass the test say the hard work is well worth it.

The satisfaction is a 30-second commute, being in charge of your own time, knowing that you can stop and do a little laundry or whatever. You don't just create a new career for yourself, you create a new lifestyle."
