Judgment Recovery is a program that has been heavily marketed over the last few years. One of the companies which market a program is called Sierra Judgment Recovery out of Nevada. I heard about them in a card deck which is like getting 50 post cards in one mailing.

Anyhow they said you could make thousands of dollars helping people recover money tied up in court judgments. They went on to say you can start out making $2,000 per month with only a $500 investment. That sounds pretty good but is it true?

I ordered their system after talking to a gal in their office. It cost about $189.00 if I remember correctly. The gal I talked to said she had been collecting judgments for about 3 years. Her boss the one who wrote the book I bought had been collecting judgments for about 7 years.

The manual recommended handling judgments that were more than $500 but less than 5,000. Here is an example of how a judgment is originated. Lets say someone owes you some money. You have called him several times and he refuses to pay you. Your only alterative is to take him to court is most likely not going to have an attorney, because the attorney could easily cost as much as $500 in legal fees. So you go to small claims court and get the proper forms, fill them out and have this person served with the papers. Your are now call the Plaintiff and he is called the Defendant.

When you get to court and the Defendant doesn't show up which happens a lot, you will automatically win the judgment which means the Defendant is required by the court to pay you the Plaintiff. However many times these judgments are difficult to collect on because you really do not know the tricks of the trade. Consequently, many do not get collected. Here is how court judgments collecting business really works.

The manual said to go to the court house and ask the clerk to let you look at the files that have Judgments of record. When you get these files you will look for un-satisfied judgments from between $500 and $5,000. The larger ones will probably have a collection agency handling them and the small ones will not be worth your time.

So you will be looking for $500 to $5,000 claims. Are there a lot of claims this size out there? The answer is a yes and no. It takes a long time to go to each of the court houses to get enough leads to keep you real busy. And, you need to remember there are others doing the same thing.

Now I realize that a lot of people that sell these courses make more money selling the course than they actually do collecting judgments. But, the people I bought the manual from were the exception. They do make money collection judgments. Their manual was very easy to understand and it included the forms you would need.

They recommended that you write letters to the holders of the judgment and offer to collect it for them. You usually charge up to 50% of the money collected. So the business could be a money maker if your inclined to work very hard the first couple of years. If you had an agreement to collect 100 $3,000 judgments that would be about $300,000. If you collected $100,000 your first year your fee would be $50,000.

Now when I called the courthouse asking about looking at files of people who had judgments, I was told that every thing was computerized and I could buy a list on a disk for $125.00. I thought I would try that idea and bought over 100,000 names of people who had judgments recorded for the last nine years.

So if the court house has every thing on the computer it makes it a lot easier for you. Now here is the problem with this business. A lot of states require anyone collecting judgments from an assignment for the benefit of others must have a license. The license in Colorado would be the same that a collection agency would need and of course this would take time and money to get.

I personally wasn't interested in collecting judgments for a living. I was just interested in learning the trick of the trade so I could collect my own judgments. I did learn one great trick. I had a person that owed me $2,000. I went to court and they did not show up. I got the judgment. Now I had to collect thought they had a bank account but I didn't know where.

Here is what I learned from this course. It said send them a check for $25.00 telling them it's a gift, a prize, whatever. When they cash it and it comes back to you will see the name of their bank with their account number. I called the bank and asked if a check for $2,000 would clear and was told yes it would at this time. So I went down to the court house and got a garnishment form and had it served to the bank. The bank sent the money to the court and I received the $2,000 the next week. I couldn't believe how simple that was.

Could you make money doing this? Probably if you could buy a list of judgments on a disk and were willing to get a license if needed and work hard. But for the amount of time you would need to make a lot money doing this you would be better of to work my real estate program. Check it out.
