Spam is the No1 customer complaint for almost all ISPs. Most ISPs tell customers they actively fight the spam problem and many advertise their anti-spam stance and spam filters as a sales point. The reality is that far from fighting the spam problem a small number of ISPs support and profit from the spam industry, provide hosting for spam-service purposes, and knowingly fuel the Internet's spam problem.

Spam is just another word for bulk e-mail. Spam (or bulk e-mail) is not any message that someone sends you that you didn't ask for. Spam is when thousands of messages are sent out. Not when you personalize something and send it to them. Spam normally doesn't work because people don't pay attention to it. And it does cost money.

If you are smamed, reply with Caution. If you decide to respond to junk e-mail, be very careful to whom and how you respond.

Do a little research before you reply. If you're getting the same newsletter every week from the same sender, check to see if the sender has a website with list-removal tips.

Read the e-mail. Check for unsubscribe information in the text of the e-mail.

Responding to a piece of junk e-mail can sometimes result in even more junk e-mail. Unless the e-mail is coming from a legitimate source, oftentimes, a response merely confirms your e-mail address. If the unsubscribe information seems legitimate, proceed.

Remember: Ending a subscription service to which you have specifically subscribed (i.e., newsletters, news profiles, etc.) should be done by following the unsubscribe instructions given on the mailing.

Report junk e-mail by forwarding it to the appropriate screen names. The first step is to identify whether or not the e-mail is coming from within your ISP or from another Internet domain.
