Mark Haroldsen was the original get-rich quick guru. Author of “How to Wake Up the Financial Genius Inside You” and “Courage to Be Rich”, Mark Haroldsen invented the full-page magazine direct-mail ad to sell his books. He was also the publisher of Financial Freedom Report and gave seminars on how to get rich by purchasing his candy and gumball vending machines and placing them in various locations.

Back in 1976 he claimed to be worth millions of dollars and said he planned to double his net worth every year for the rest of his life. I haven’t done the math, but at a rough guess I would say that by now, he should be worth more than the total amount of money floating around in the global economy. I doubt it though.

In June, 1996, the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint against Marc Haroldsen's FreeCom Communications and some affiliated companies, in connection with his gumball vending venture. Then in 1997, Mark Haroldsen was charged with 83 counts of deceptive sales practices by the State of Utah. His local newspaper, “The Salt Lake Tribune”, ran a report which stated: “Financial Freedom Report Fined. A Salt Lake City-based business affiliated with get-rich-quick author Mark O. Haroldsen has been ordered by the Utah Division of Consumer Protection to pay an $83,000 fine for violations of the state's Consumer Sales Practices Act.”
